How to Create an Awesome Harvest Cross Stitch

Cross-stitch projects are meant to spread autumn cheer throughout a home. Our hand-stitched towels can be used in the kitchen or bath, but be sure to hang them in a place of prominence.

What you need to make a cross-stitch

  •  18x19 – inch piece of 14 count ivory cloth.
  •  Cotton embroidery floss of the colors listed in the key points of Step 1
  •  Size 26 or 24 tapestry needle

For the frame
  • A wooden frame with an 8-1/4 x 9-1/8 inch opening
  • Delta Ceramcoat Arcylic Paint : Forest Green #2010
  • Tack cloth
  • Medium – grit sandpaper.
  • Self-stick mounting board
  • Transfer paper
  • Tracing paper
  • Thin sheet of rusty tin
  • 9x10 inch piece of fleece
  • Self-stick mounting board
  • Tin snips
  • Thin sheet of rusty tin
  • 10 small twigs
  • Hot glue and glue pen
  • Sheet moss

Instructions:-

Step 1 – Decide on the free pattern and color key for this project.

Step 2 – Make a zig-zag stitch or overcast the edges of the fabric to prevent the material from fraying. Next find the center of the chart and the fabric, as stitching is to start from there. Use two strands of floss to work on the cross- stitches. Work on the backstitches using only one ply of floss. Now work the French knots, using one strand of floss wrapped twice around the needle.

Step 3 – The finished stitchery now has to be pressed. Place the fabric face down on a soft towel and press it from the back. Center the design and trim the stitchery to 12x13 inches.

Step 4 –A good color for the frame will be forest green. Finish painting the frame and let the paint dry. To give it a rustic look its best to sand off some of the paint from the edges and corners. Wipe the frame with a tack cloth to remove sanding dust.

Step 5 – Cut the self-stick mounting board, in order to make it fit to the opening of the frame. The fleece can be centered over the self-stick mounting board. Then trim off the excess fleece. Center the pressed stitchery, on the fleece-covered board. Then wrap the excess fabric over the mounting board and tape it in place. Next, using small brads of glazier’s points, secure the mounted stitchery over the frame.

Step 6 – Now add pumpkins made of tin. Trace the pumpkins made of tin, onto a tracing paper. Transfer one small and two large pumpkins onto the rusty tin using a transfer paper. Cut the shapes out using tin snips.

Step 7 – Decorate the frame, referring the photograph for placement. Then use a glue gun to adhere moss and twigs to the two corners of the frame. Glue the tin pumpkin shapes, on the twigs and moss.

Repeat the pattern to make a longer strand of large towels. You have successfully framed an eye-catching harvest cross-stitch. These cross-stitched towels look great in a bathroom, kitchen and dining space.

Cross Stitching kits
Cross stitch is a great hobby for the ones who love stitching. If you find interest in stitching, then you will learn this art-work quickly. The best part of this type of stitching is that there are no limitations for learning allowing everyone can take up these lessons. There are some supplies that you will need for cross-stitching. Here we discuss about these essentials supplies that will make your cross-stitching perfect.
  • Fabric - The best cloth for cross-stitch is Aida. It is made of cotton and a good material to work both for new learners and experienced ones. If you are cross-stitching for the first time, it is advisable to begin your work with inexpensive cloth. Use embroidery hoop that will keep the cloth in a good condition and make stitching easy for you. Each side of your design should have a gap of at least 3-4 inches to make the stitching perfect.
  • Needles - You should use tapestry needles for cross-stitch since they are the best to complete the work easily. Choose a needle that has a large eye and blunt end in order to prevent any kind of damage on the cloth. Make sure you choose correct size needle that will easily pass through the hole without making holes in the fabric. Besides this, you should not leave the needle on the cloth since this can leave a stain mark on your cloth and damage it badly.
  • Threads - Use the thread that will not lose its color after being washed. In case you have any doubt about the color, it is better to wash them before using. Threads are available in different colors and when cross-stitching, make sure you choose the exact color that will go best with the design. Other than this, consider the quality of the thread you will use so that it lasts long and gives you the desired results.
  • Hoops and frames - Embroidery hoops and frames are good materials used for cross-stitching so that the stitch is smooth and easy to maintain. Choose a frame that surrounds the design completely without the need to fold the cloth. When you use white tape on the hoop, it will hold the cloth in its place and prevent it from staining. Use a tissue paper between the hoop and fabric so that the cloth may not get stain mark.
  • Scissors - Small threads need to cut neatly in cross-stitching. For this, it is important to use correct size scissors for the art-work. Using two pairs of scissors is necessary as the first pair is used for cutting the cloth and the second pair for cutting the floss.
It is advisable that you choose appropriate supplies when cross stitching to make the work look attractive.
